New Fauna

There are a few new residents at the park this spring:

Mr. Swan:

That dark spot on the side is a foot stuck up under his wing. Apparently swans do that! I've seen up to six swans, at times, though there was only this one yesterday and none today.

And a bunch of these:

Took me some searching to figure out what they are. They're American Coots. This picture only shows a little, but they have GIANT FEET. Very cute. I hope they stick around and have babies, because they have the the world's ugliest chicks. *squee*

Those chicks (ducklings?) look like they got in the way of a kid with some spray paint.

Cootlings, maybe?

I know, they're just hideous! And so adorable. :D

I think it must be.

The coots at the park didn't seem especially crazy, but they only just arrived. Here's hoping!

And the adolescents are goofy-looking too:

My husband said it looked like it put on some comedy feet.

I have a weakness for ugly baby animals. :D

Those are Sideshow-Bob-sized feet. Scary!

Swans sure are flexible. They must do yoga.

And those baby coots have the face that only a mama coot could love. I wonder if predators see them and think, "Eww, do I really want to eat something that ugly?"

I've been trying to figure out how that swan foot is connected to where I think the leg should be and it doesn't seem to quite go...

Ugliness as a defense mechanism! I bet you're right.

I'm pouty because I haven't seen any baby geese or ducks yet. Soon, I hope. Those coots look like they're wearing little boas. Tres chick.

Spring here (IL) been so cold, there are no baby anythings yet. I've seen some future parents nesting!
